After-School 2017-2018

Xian Yun’s After School Program for grades K-5 is an extension of the whole-child education model adopted by our full-time arts high school and middle school program.

We currently offer both a Chinese Immersion and English language afterschool program dedicated to providing high-quality academic guidance and a safe, nurturing environment for our young students.

The afterschool programs focus on homework support, with enrichment reading, activities, and games in English and Chinese.  Our after school instructors teach and enforce good study skills and habits, with the aim of helping students develop into independent learners. A holistic educational approach emphasizes character building and moral values alongside high academic and language achievement.

In addition, afterschool students have the opportunity to take advantage of extra-curricular classes offered under Xian Yun’s Extended Education Program. A wide range of group and private classes are available, including visual arts, Chinese, Math, piano, and the Extended Dance Program.  (fees,   schedules separate;  see details.)

Xian Yun’s After School Program is offered daily from Monday through Friday, with both 3- and 4-hour options. Pickup is available at participating schools (see details below).

Meet Our After-School Program Faculty

Adele Wang Ms. Adele Wang – After-School Program DirectorMs. Wang came to Xian Yun CA with 16 years of teaching experience and two college degrees, one in education and the other in early childhood development. In her teaching she helps young children understand, speak and write the Mandarin language, bringing in stories for the class to read together and working with the students to recognize and write the characters. As you watch her you will see the careful balance she maintains between praising the students for what they are doing and encouraging them to increase their abilities. She often uses the characters’ etymology to help students remember their meaning.

She toured with Shen Yun Performing Arts for two years and then went to study abroad. Upon returning to the United States, she began teaching Chinese dance at Xian Yun CA in 2010. After finding great interest in early childhood education, Ms. Sohn joined Xian Yun CA’s after-school program in 2015 and is currently pursuing a degree in education.

What Parents Are Saying…

“Our daughter has been full time in Xian Yun’s after-school program for 1-1/2 years and this has really increased her excitement about Chinese and aided her language acquisition beyond what the Mandarin Immersion program at her school provides. The teachers are dedicated to understanding where each child is at academically and work with them from that basis – not just with their homework but also on Chinese reading and cultural understanding. She enjoys the arts & crafts where she’s learned origami, beading and small clay sculptural work.  We’re impressed to see the big gains in flexibility and focus she has gained from her dance classes. But most important is that she feels comfortable at the school – the environment is nurturing and you can tell the kids are happy there.”

“Xian Yun provides my child with a fully immersive experience in traditional arts. My child studies piano, classical Chinese dance, fine arts, poetry, and language–all at a very high level.”

“We are delighted with the progress our 1st grader has made in the Xian Yun after-school program this year. He enjoys the arts activities such as beading and the drawing class. He has also benefited enormously from the support offered during homework time and we have noticed a great improvement in his Chinese characters and sentence writing. We are delighted to have him in such a caring, supportive and nurturing environment.”
